Background

Who We Are?

Umurage Communication for Development (UmC) is locally-registered Rwandan organization specialized in developing behavior change communication programs through radio drama. It was established as a local branch of Population Media Center (PMC), a US International NGO which has operated in more than 50 countries around the world including Rwanda (2006-2009).

Several members of the UMC team were instrumental to the success of a previous radio serial drama in Rwanda, Umurage Urukwiye (Rwanda’s Brighter Future), created by Population Media Center from July 2007 to August 2009.

Umurage Urukwiye  was a 312-episode radio serial drama that addressed a combination of issues, including family planning, prevention of HIV/AIDS, preservation of wildlife habitat, preservation of natural resources, land conservation, sustainable farming practices, and promotion of civil harmony.

Because of the impact of the program, PMC rebroadcast it on Radio Rwanda from October 2012 through 2014. Umurage Urwikwiye reached 3.5 million Rwandan listeners and created positive behaviour changes, later on was followed by another serial drama Impano n’ Impamba (A Gift for Today that will Last a Long Time)
