Umurage Communication for Development (UmC), in collaboration with the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC), recently conducted a public awareness campaign on immunization and MPOX.
This initiative aimed to encourage communities to vaccinate their children and take preventive measures against monkeypox outbreaks. The campaign was implemented in Kamonyi and Muhanga districts.
The awareness events occurred on March 23, 2025, in Kamonyi District (Runda Sector, Bishenyi Market) and on March 24, 2025, in Muhanga District (Mushishiro Sector, Kabadaha Market). The campaign brought together key stakeholders, including district health directors, immunization officers, and other local health authorities.
A highlight of the campaign was a theatrical performance by Umurage artists, delivering an engaging sketch that emphasized the importance of immunization and proper hygiene practices in preventing MPOX. The performance educated attendees on how the disease spreads—mainly through bodily fluids—and highlighted common symptoms such as severe headaches, high fever, muscle pain, and blister-like lesions.
The events drew an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 residents from Runda and Rugarika sectors in Kamonyi, as well as Mushishiro, Rugendabare, and Kabacuzi sectors in Muhanga District.
Through interactive sessions and community engagement, the campaign successfully reinforced the critical role of immunization in public health.
