AWARENESS CAMPAIGN PROMOTING THE USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IN KIGEME AND MUGOMBWA CAMPS

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN PROMOTING THE USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IN KIGEME AND MUGOMBWA CAMPS

On August 20 and 21, 2025, Umurage Communication for Development, in partnership with Practical Action, carried out a renewable energy awareness campaign in Kigeme Camp, located in Nyamagabe District, and Mugombwa Camp, located in Gisagara District. The main goal of the campaign was to continue encouraging residents of the camps and surrounding communities to use solar energy, clean cookstoves, and to protect standalone street lighting infrastructure.

During the campaign, the Umurage drama team delivered key messages through live performances. The plays reminded camp residents about the importance of using environmentally friendly cookstoves that utilize safe and sustainable fuels, highlighting the benefits for both families and the country at large. The drama also emphasized how solar energy can support individual development by enabling new opportunities and reducing reliance on harmful energy sources. In addition, the actors encouraged the community to take good care of solar-powered streetlights, which improve safety and community well-being.

Practical Action representatives in both camps addressed the community with messages urging them to increase efforts to purchase safe cooking fuels and adopt cookstoves that do not harm the environment. The campaign was also attended by key partners of Practical Action, including UNHCR and MINEMA, showing strong institutional support for renewable energy initiatives.

Suppliers of clean cookstoves and solar products also participated in the campaign, including Solektra, Agro Plast, MC Green, Eco Green, and Belecom. They used the opportunity to introduce their products, share where they operate, and highlight the quality and benefits of their technologies to the community.
