Road shows to promote umurage drama continue to indicate relevance

Umurage radio serial drama has been raising awareness on child protection, gender-based violence, nutrition and family planning across the country since its official launch in June 2017.

Apart from broadcasting and rebroadcasting the drama, there have been outreach campaigns in form of road shows.  Eight caravans have been concluded, the recent one having been conducted in Karongi district.

The aim of such outreach programs is to create awareness about the drama, indentify the listners’ understanding of the drama and putting emphasis on issues highlighted.

To most people approached during the caravans, the drama touches issues that are common in their daily lives. Clarisse Uwineza a resident in Bwishyura sector (Karongi district) expressed how misunderstandings between a husband and wife heavily affect a family and society at large.

“I wish all couples could take time to listen to the drama, not only for entertainment but learning how to protect and develop an individual’s family.

In all the districts covered through the caravans, at least one of the issues addressed in the drama appears relevant.  One Annonciata Mukamanzi in Musanze district said “I didn’t regard making my child miss class to take with me agricultural harvests to the market on a single school day as denying him of his rights… But now I know”. This was after a live drama performance in Nkotsi sector where the aspect of child protection was emphasized.

This outreach campaign is also aimed at Increasing understanding of   messages in the drama by the community, enable the local community relate issues in the drama to their way of life and using experts, partners, actors and UmC Staff to reinforce messages for positive change.
